Skipping Breakfast Linked To Weight Gain
Posted on: 03-03-2008

New York (eCanadaNow) - According to a e new study, teens who skip breakfast are more likely to have weight problems, compared to those who make the time to eat something in the morning.
Researchers from The University Of Minnesota’s Project EAT examined 2,216 teenagers and their eating habits for five straight years.
The study found that teenagers who ate breakfast in the morning were less likely to gain weight and had a lower body mass index (BMI) compared to teens who skipped breakfast.
Lead researcher Mark Pereira says teens who skip their first meal are more likely to reach for fatty foods later on in the day to compensate for the lack of nutrients.
“Although adolescents may think that skipping breakfast seems like a good way to save on calories, findings suggest the opposite,” said DianneNeumark-Sztainer, Project EAT’s principal investigator. “Eating a healthy breakfast may help adolescents avoid overeating later in the day and disrupt unhealthy eating patterns, such as not eating early in the day and eating a lot late in the evening.”
Researchers say 25 percent of teens in the U.S. skip breakfast.
“In general, there’s lots of opportunities within the context of a breakfast meal to make healthy choices,” he said Pereira.
“Ready-to-eat breakfast cereals can be high in sugar, but they also can be high in fiber and nutrients. And they can be consumed with low-fat milk and maybe some fruit or fruit juice. On the other hand, there’s opportunities, just like there always is with every meal, to make poor choices.”
